Early one Saturday morning in 1990, my waterbed started shaking. I jarred awake to see Penny, my 2 ½ year-old border collie mix, with her legs held stiff, and her head thrown back, every muscle quivering as she lay in the midst of a grand mal seizure. Her first.
The vet prescribed phenobarbital, which limited her seizures, but left her sleepy – all the time. I trusted my vet, but found he didn’t always have the answers. I learned to get second opinions, to research, and sometimes try experimental methods.
My next dog, Kaylee, a springer spaniel, had even more challenging medical issues after bone cancer struck at the site of a former injury. The vet amputated her leg, but she eventually needed a wheel chair as her legs became paralyzed. Kaylee’s tale of survival and its effect on me, and my relationship with my husband, inspired me to become a writer.
My next springer, Cassie, also suffered from medical issues, ranging from coonhound paralysis, to chronic lymphocytic leukemia, to a brain tumor.
All of these illnesses made me wonder about how the environment affects our pets.
Why do I write? I want to help people have healthy, happy pets.
