Avoid the Epidemic of Sick, Overweight Dogs and

The High Cost of Vet Bills

Before it’s too late

What’s Really in your Dog’s Food?

Dear Pet Parent,

Go into the kitchen and look at the labels on the foods and treats you feed your dog.  Go ahead.  I’ll wait a minute while you stack them in front of you. dog getting a treat

Do you recognize any of the ingredients as typical food?  Or do they appear as some sort of chemicals?

Likely you bought the name brands and never paid much attention to the labels.  As long as your dog liked it and seemed healthy – why worry?

But when your dog hit middle age, he started to change.  He gained weight, his coat dulled, and he developed allergies and illnesses.  The signs were subtle and took years to develop.  But you notice he visits the vet more often and medical costs have soared.

  • Can you avoid having your dog’s health decline as he ages?
  • Can he live a healthy life well into his teens?

From middle age to senior status are the best years of a dog’s life—as long as they’re healthy.  By then they’ve lost their craziness of adolescence and act fairly well behaved.  It’s taken a lot of effort to get them to this stage.

You want to enjoy it.

Cancer or Illness—the Fate of Most Dogs

A decade ago, during a routine annual vet visit for my eight year-old springer spaniel, a blood test showed something unusual, a high lymphocyte count.  Multiple re-checks showed it kept climbing. My happy, energetic Cassie had developed chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a blood cancer.

My vet put her on low dose chemotherapy. Initially, a monthly prescription for Leukerin cost $4.67/pill, now it’s up to $25!  Frequent re-checks at the vet added to my expenses.  But the cost was only part of it.

The drugs had side effects.  She leaked urine and had to wear a diaper, making her smell.  Her fur thinned and dulled, and her beautiful feathered tail looked like a rats. She developed chronic sores since her skin wouldn’t heal.  After three years, Cassie’s leukemia morphed into a brain tumor.  Within a week, she lost her motor skills and needed a sling and harness to help her walk.  When she could no longer eliminate her waste, I knew it was time. Euthanizing my constant companion was one of the hardest things I ever did.

What could have caused Cassie’s cancer?  Her food?  Her environment?  Her genetics?

Over 50% of older dogs over 8 die from cancer.  We can’t control our dog’s genetics and can make only limited changes to their environment.  But…

We can control the quality of their food

Cassie ate the same dry dog food her entire life.  It was a name brand, and supposedly of higher quality.  But treats —there I gave her whatever she liked, no matter what the ingredients.  I never checked.

What Should I Feed my Dogs so they Live a Long, Healthy Life?

Each month over 22,500 people search the web for dog treats.  Over 8,000 of them seek natural treats.

  • Can you see your dog at age twelve, fourteen, or even sixteen or older lying at your feet, snoring away while he gently touches you while you read a book?
  • Picture yourself walking your gray-muzzled dog more than a mile to the grocery store– and he’s ready for more.
  • See yourself at the vet for his semi-annual exam —and get a clean bill of health. (Most vets recommend senior dogs have six-month checkups).
  • When he’s well into his teens, will he bring you his ball and ask you to toss it?

But if you’re like me, most of your dogs have not lived long healthy lives—their time cut short by cancer or other illnesses.

After Cassie died, my husband and I decided to give our dogs natural, homemade treats and foods created from our garden and people-food quality meat.

We developed Furry Friends Natural Products, and expanded from our own garden to local farmers growing food organically, without chemicals.  We inspected farms raising cows, chicken, turkeys and lamb using humane conditions.   We inspect each of these farms, and the slaughterhouses, monthly to ensure their foods match our standards, which are much stricter than the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) and the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials).

Chipper, my oldest, is a black and white cocker spaniel, who’s fourteen and still going strong after a two-mile walk.

He’s healthy and happy and so am I.  So is his vet, who now carries our line of his favorite treats….

Pop-Pup Naturals

In the overwhelming sea of dog treat choices out there, it’s important to find a truly healthy snack for dogs.  I’m very impressed with the integrity of your business and I recommend Pup-Pop Naturals to all my clients looking for healthy treats for training or just anytime.  We’re proud to be one of the first veterinary clinics to carry your products especially since we offer holistic and alternative pet care in addition to traditional medicine.  We endorse only the healthiest, safest products, and Pup-Pop Naturals are at the top of our list of recommended treats.”                                   -S. Karovski, DVM

So let’s get back to the labels on the dog food and treats that you have in front of you.  What are the first three ingredients? These are the largest portions.

INGREDIENTS ARE CRITICAL

Meat by-products
  • These are animal parts not suitable for human consumption and include; feet, livers, lungs, heads, brains, spleen, kidneys, stomach, intestines, and other parts.
    • By-products listed by species (chicken by-products for example) are a better source of protein than by-products with the generic term “meat.” Meat by-products can contain parts of animals that may have been dead on arrival, contaminated, or not properly refrigerated.
    • By-product ingredients create cheaper food.

Corn

  • Corn is not nutritious for dogs and is a cheap filler food.
  • It can contribute to weight gain.
  • Some dogs may develop allergies
  • Healthy foods don’t have corn or corn-based products as one of the dominant ingredients.

Soy

  • Although soy is considered a healthy alternative for humans (such as soy milk), it’s not so good for dogs.
    • It contains estrogens, so eating many soy products may disrupt their endocrine system.
    • Soy may cause gas, bloat and seizures.
  • Soy is a much cheaper source of protein than meat and eggs.
  • Vegetable broth is typically a soy product.

Preservatives

  • Many dog foods and treats still use artificial preservatives such as:
    • Ethoxyquin linked as a possible cause for some liver and blood Some countries have banned its use, but not the U.S.
    • Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), both of which the World Health Organization have listed as suspicious cancer-causing compounds.
  • When you feed these preservatives to your pet every day, day after day, year after year: Cumulative effects can cause cancer, sending your pets to an early grave.

WOULD YOU EAT THESE FOODS?

But wait – there’s more.

WHAT COUNTRY PRODUCED IT?

Look at the labels again.  Does it say “Product of…,”  or “Produced in….”?

China?                                     Mexico?                      U.S.?

Have you heard about recalls on dog food and treats?

  • 4,800 pets became ill. Up to 1,000 died.  The apparent source— chicken, duck, and sweet potato jerky treats, and rawhides.
    • Many treats contained glycerin or protein derived from jatropha seeds. These may have by-products containing toxic phorbol esters.
    • Other jerky treats were associated with kidney failure. These contained residues from the highly poisonous pesticide phorate.
  • Salmonella tainted other recalled foods.
    • Some foods contained arsenic.

All of these products came from China.

  • In 2015, Petco pulled all Chinese-made dog and cat treats from their shelves due to possible links to 4,800 unexplained sicknesses and up to 1,000 deaths.
  • PetSmart soon followed suit.

What about dog treats or foods from Mexico or other countries?

All of them tend to contain higher levels of contaminants than treats made in the U.S.

My dog’s not sick, why should I worry?

Some of these chemicals slowly poison your dog causing a decline in health.  But if he experiences lots of vomiting, diarrhea, listlessness, lack of appetite you should bring him to your vet immediately.
